Inevitable Crimes of Passion is the perfume of a Henry James novel. It's not one specific book, but as every one of his stories involves at least one young innocent rich American being seduced by one or more older, impoverished, charming shameless Europeans, it’s the scent of outrageous seduction.

It starts with an invitation into the orangery, then to the parlour for cake and coffee, into the drawing room for cognac, then into the cellar never to be seen again.

The use of mushroom absolute in Inevitable Crimes of Passion creates a very unique effect that enhances the feeling of being in a dank cellar full of discarded, tattered velvet furniture, while also cranking up the volume on patchouli’s fantastic earthiness.

Montabaco Verano is a flanker of Ormonde Jayne’s smash hit bestseller, Montabaco but with extra added grapefruit.

Most of the citrus smells you encounter in a perfume are super volatile, which is why they generally will not hang about for a long time. Grapefruit is a bit different because the smell of grapefruit in a fragrance is made with an ingredient called Methyl Pamplemousse. It brings all of the wonderfully fresh, tangy bite of grapefruit, and it lasts a lot longer than most of its natural citrus counterparts. It brings a refreshing waft of brightness to Montabaco.

Celadon is Critical Theory disguised as perfume. It interrogates language, perception and suggestibility. It’s built around a hyper real lettuce accord surrounded by an impressionist landscape of cold abstract textures.

Our modern lexicon uses fruits in a complimentary way. For instance, “she’s a peach”; however, when it comes to vegetables, it’s a completely different story. Say, “she’s a potato”, and you’ll get a slap. But the iceberg realness in Celadon is fantastic - cool, crisp, and invigorating. And even though its execution is so exact, being that it’s within the context of a fragrance, your brain would probably never go to the vegetable aisle if it hadn’t been directed there. It could have just as easily been described as jade raindrops and nobody would think twice because it’s a fragrance.

Not only is this a brilliant and brave piece of perfumery that would not feel out of place amongst the best of Comme des Garcons, but it’s also playful, tongue-in-cheek and full of wit. We love it.

For a die-hard fragrance fan, evernia prunastriis the stuff of legends. Most people know it as oakmoss, and some of the most groundbreaking perfumes in history, Chypre de Coty, Guerlain’s Mitsouko, Bandit from Robert Piguet and Balmain’s Vent Vert (to name just a few), were built on a backbone of oakmoss.

However it’s difficult to find classically structured chypre perfumes in modern perfume collections. Many people believe this is due to IFRA’s regulations which restrict the use of oakmoss; however, even at that small percentage, it’s still entirely possible to achieve the same level of character you’d find in fragrances decades ago. The issue is twofold. Get ready to grab your pearls and shoutquelle horreur.

When customers are shopping in boutiques and beauty halls for fragrance, the perfumes they’re spraying on the smelling strips have about 15 seconds to make a compelling impression to hopefully qualify for skin time. Chypres need a good few hours on skin to allow someone to fully appreciate the movement of their trajectory so they don’t really stand much of a chance in a space like Selfridges or Harrods. This has led to them falling out of fashion.

But Ormonde Jayne is staking a reclaim. Linda Pilkington in collaboration with perfumer Geza Schoen have taken a classic oakmoss accord redolent with the scent of tangled earth on the forest floor and centered it within a modern canvas of approachable, easy-wearing cashmeran and iso-e-super. Evernia is a thoroughly contemporary spin on one of perfumery’s most beloved ingredients.
