"With Nectary we wanted to create a surreal and untamed garden... for the skin. A garden where the flowers were in brilliant technicolour, 6ft high flowerheads, scythe-like thorns, huge elephant-ear-like rubbery leaves, gigantic terracotta pots and a really 'close' atmosphere. As such, we wanted to push each of the facets a little so as to try to translate this narrative. The animalics are a key structural component as they give an alluring diffusion that seems to undulate, shimmer and radiate.”
“The oud acts a bit like glue - binding each of the sensations that almost seem to be shattering and diffusing in negative directions, each repelling one another, the oud grounds this aromatic 'polarity'. Focussing on the oud for a moment, we wanted to add texture here too, not that real oud require doing so, but we wanted to exaggerate the inherent minerality of the oud that we use in Nectary.” Euan McCall, Jorum Studio.
I mean, it really doesn’t get much better than when it comes from the perfumer himself, does it?
Wearing a perfume like Nectary is one of those olfactory encounters that takes things to the next level. This is fragrance beyond scent as an accessory. Nectary has Presence (capital P required). We retired Malle’s Portrait of a Lady for this one.
Real optimism is about more than just something to make you smile. It’s about more than just having a giggle. The top-to-bottom woods explored in Vaunt’s The Optimist is an uber intelligent spin on the subject that will make you think twice.
Woody smells make us think about trees. Trees are great. But, trees also have deep roots, they stand tall and reach way up into the sky. Trees are tenacious, strong and reassuring.
And that’s what The Optimist evokes for us. Mix in a dash of understated sophistication, and you’ve got one cracking perfume.
So, throw those shoulders back. Head up. Go get ‘em, tiger.
Tokyo is another story of incense taken outside the familiar church territory we’ve all probably smelled before. It’s a full-circle exploration of humid back streets leading to a sun dappled forest bath while chasing a tail of elusive smoke.
Histoires de Parfums has been an independent stalwart within the industry since 2000. The same year Frederic Malle launched. Created by Gérald Ghislain as a fragrant library to evoke stories through scent just as you’d find in books, music and poetry. Exploring the collection, you discover perfumes inspired by legendary historical figures such as George Sand, Jules Verne and Mata Hari, and the years in which they lived. There’s even a dash of the surreal with the This Is Not a Blue Bottle series.
Aside from the fragrances he’s made himself, Ghislain has worked with some of the industry’s most exciting perfumers - Julien Rasquinet, Luca Maffei, Fanny Bal and Magali Senequier.
Veni is a wild ride, but it’s one that takes place within a comfortably upholstered seat. There is a tense tug-of-war taking place within its canvas of warm, ambery woods that begins with its suckerpunch of fiery cinnamon and carnation as they collide with the cool aromatics of cardamom and lavender to create a tense olfactory hiss like hot metal dipped into alchemical waters.
As it evolves, Veni continues this precarious tightrope walk balanced on a razor’s edge between the sweet lure of vanilla and toffee and the earthy abrasion of camphorous patchouli and the dry scorch of guaiac wood.
It might leave you a bit white-knuckled, but we promise you’ll enjoy every twist and turn.
There are some perfumes inspired by aspirational nights out full of glamour, champagne and glittering chandeliers. Maxed Out is the opposite of that. Dodgy bars (you know the kind with sticky floors), smoking blunts, cash up-front liaisons, passing out in a dingy back alley, regret and an espresso for when you finally come round.
Captured by Candlelight hits at just the right side of appetising.
Balance and restraint are the key to making any perfume with gourmand elements work. The last thing anyone wants to smell like is a cupcake. Well, maybe some people do. No judgement. (We’re totally judging).
Captured by Candlelight is a perfume inspired by perfumer (and writer) Sarah McCartney’s story of the same name. There’s a scene in the story where a huge, flaming Christmas pudding is being wheeled into a candlelit, oak-panelled dining room. She’s told that part of the story with smells.
We love its considered construction of notes - the gummy, stewed fruits, flaming treacle, oak panels and freshly extinguished candles. You really smell the story when you wear it.

THE SILENT PATH | Voices coming from the beach are long gone. The Mediterranean welcomes autumn. It is oh so quiet up here. The mood is impossible to put into words. A scent captures it instead. Sweet aromatic notes of dry soil and Mediterranean pines are floating in the air. Warm, woody, silent – a fragrant memory that is here to stay.
7753 stands for the dimensions of the Mona Lisa painting, for this perfume is not the perfume of an image nor the mere perfume of a woman frozen in the past but that of Womankind. It is the scent of an emotion, of an undecipherable glance, of her unexplainable beauty and of her immersive power that draws us in. A hidden number for a hidden smile. Top notes of Italian bergamot, ivy and Ma Khaen berry give way to a heart of tuberose, Barbary fig and heliotrope before a dry-down of vetiver, sandalwood and oakmoss rounds out this enigmatic and voluptuous Fresh-Floral eau de parfum.
