Maya Njie is a perfumer who knows how to work the most out of her materials. While the surface facades of her fragrances present themselves with a welcoming clarity and easy to read legibility, the experience of wearing them gives the impression that they’re supported by a complex architecture that lend these surfaces an expansive, slow-moving trajectory designed to meet the demands of a modern, perfume-loving audience.
Maya’s perfumes were inspired by photos of her family from the 1970’s, Scandinavian upbringing and West African heritage. Her background studying colour and texture give her scents a tactile, three-dimensional quality. Her perfumes develop in subtle shifts of colour, each one meandering into the next where sepia-toned nostalgia is orchestrated into notably contemporary olfactory compositions.
