Tobak - Maya Njie

Le Labo does this thing where they call a perfume one thing, but it ends up smelling of another thing. With Tobak, Maya Njie says, “hold my beer, hun”.

What begins as a carpet of sun-cured, cinnamon-sprinkled tobacco unfurls into an alluring hum of animalic musks. These are the types of smells you’d find in perfumes composed by legendary perfumer Jean Carles for Schiaparelli and Lucien Lelong in the 1930s.

That’s not to say Tobak is derivative in any way. It’s a fearless composition that’s comfortable in its own skin. Pearl-clutchingly subversive in its two fingers to the fresh and clean, but pulled off with so much panache you’ll definitely be back for another sniff.
