1899 Hemingway - Histoires de Parfums
Because we don’t have a vast bank of smell descriptors to dip into when describing scent, we often borrow from other sensory realms in a way similar to synaesthesia. That’s when you perceive with one sense but interpret it through another. For instance, experiencing colours when you hear music.
In its rendering of a tulip, Amsterdam has a play between modalities. Perfumer Giorgia Navarra exercises some serious perfumery sleight of hand using saffron and a mix of pink and Szechuan peppers to create the impression of a rich, dark red colour and a healthy shot of aldehydes for waxy petals.
Like a lot of flowers, it’s impossible to extract fragrant essences from tulips, so whenever you see them referenced in a list of notes, they’re always a recreation. However, we love Amsterdam for not just recreating a smell, but also its deep delve into texture and colour.
